Instructor Station
The Instructor Station is a mandatory element of the STCW simulators. It is also a useful instrument for other types of training. The configuration of the Instructor Station is dependent on the trainee station configuration. Usually the outside view displays and a number of navigation screens are duplicated on normal PC monitors, using cable splitters and extenders. This way, the instructor can follow the trainee’s decisions and actions in detail.
With Exercise Manager component of the NAUTIS Instructor Station, the instructor can carry out the following tasks:
- Prepare an exercise. Select a training environment, and add one or more vessels in it, using the easy drag-and-drop interface. Set the weather conditions and time of the day. Save the exercise for later use, or start straight away.
- Create a complex track and add target vessels or helicopters to it
- The NAUTIS Instructor Station has both a 3D bird's eye view of the environment and a 2D chart view. The instructor can easily move to any location, and take the viewpoint of any of the vessels.
- Initiate the exercise. The Start Exercise action automatically starts a multiplayer server, so one or more trainees can log into the exercise.
- Assign trainees that are logged into the exercise to one of the vessels
- Start, pause, record or stop the exercise.
During an exercise, the instructor can perform the following actions:
- Change the weather, visibility and time of day
- Show a trail of all the ship movements
- Shift any of the vessels to a different position
- Add new target vessels, and set their speed and direction, or add them to a complex track
- Change the track of the AI vessels or helicopters
By also running a NAUTIS Trainee Station on an additional screen on the same PC, the instructor can assume the role of another vessel or helicopter, interacting with the trainee. He can assign himself to different vessels during the course of an exercise. For example:
- A tugboat, in a mooring or unmooring exercise
- A ship in distress, during a rescue exercise
- A replenishment vessel, during a replenishment at sea exercise
- A helicopter, in a helicopter landing or rescue operations exercise
The instructor station configuration for DNV Class A and B simulators integrates three PCs and 15 (Class A) or 11 (Class B) 20" LCD screens. For controlling one or more Desktop Trainers or RHIB trainers, just one PC is sufficient, with 3 connected monitors. A second PC can optionally run the display of one or more trainee monitoring cameras.
